Campaign For Net Neutrality - Press Release

The following is a press release made by FSFTN to campaign for Net Neutrality.

FSFTN's awareness campaign on Net Neutrality on April 23

Dear Sir/Madam,

In the past few weeks, there has been a surge in online activism on the issue of net neutrality. After the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India published a consultation paper on the issue, lakhs of people have written to the TRAI protesting against how its document values the interest of telecom companies over an open internet.

Net neutrality is the concept that all online services should be treated equally by telecom companies without any special treatment for any site or service. Without net neutrality, the internet will be broken up and users can't utilise the potential of the internet fully.

Without net neutrality, only existing, already rich companies and services can offer their content. There is also the possibility that user will have to pay more for some content. But most of all, the idea of a free (as in freedom) and open internet is under threat. Nearly 10 lakh people have responded to TRAI's consultation paper online. However, more people have to be made aware. Also, the need for a continued campaign has to be stressed.

Hence, Free Software Foundation Tamil Nadu (FSFTN) is organising an awareness walkathon at Besant Nagar Beach on April 23 on the issue. FSFTN, part of Free Software Movement of India, has been campaigning about the importance of Free (as in Freedom) Software since 2008. It has held public meetings on issues like Section 66A.
